WHAT IS PERFECTION COSTING YOU?
Can we first kick off today’s episode by simply acknowledging that PERFECT DOESN’T EXIST? I feel like we know this and I feel like if we all gathered together in a space + shared our unique stories, we could agree that there’s no such thing as perfect.
Yet.
We wait for a sign.
We wait to feel ready.
We wait to gather all the information.
We wait for the clarity before diving into something new.
We wait to figure out the exact steps needed + exactly how to do the thing we want to do.
And while we wait we tell ourselves this lie that if it isn’t PERFECTLY EXECUTED we’re not really ready. Bc in all that waiting…what are you usually doing? Grabbing intel. And in the pursuit of grabbing intel we begin to measure ourselves up to the person who’s already light years ahead of us in their PROCESS. We compare. We get defeated. We think we need to know more or learn more or wait more and we get stuck in this vicious cycle.
Friends. This is costing us SO SO MUCH bc all of that waiting is WASTED TIME. Wasted time bc -
You could be gaining clarity with each next right step into uncertainty.
You could be gaining more information every time you step into the arena + try something.
You could be getting signs the more you stay aligned + focused on your mission + calling.
You could feel more and more ready, more and more confident in your craft, every time you show up and do the dang thing.
You could be figuring ish OUT bc every time you take action you learn how to execute better and better.
Do you see? Perfection doesn’t exist. But TBH, hiding behind perfection isn’t a badge of honor to wear either, friends.
When I would mentor women to start their own wellness businesses in the online space, the biggest reason for not taking simple actions…like posting on social, sharing their story, showing up and marketing in their stories + feed, using their journey to inspire others, etc etc etc…was always “Britt, I’m such a perfectionist.”
But hear me clear -
YOU CAN’T MAKE SOMETHING PERFECT IF YOU NEVER SHOW UP AND DO IT.
It has to actually EXIST in order to “perfect” it, right?
The post you never posted. It’s not waiting for the perfect words. It doesn’t exist.
The dream you haven’t started building. It’s not waiting for the perfect time. It doesn’t exist.
The lifestyle you desire. It’s not waiting for a perfect season. It doesn’t exist.
Because all you have is what is real and true and OUT THERE today. Imperfect and all.
When we claim to be perfectionist, what’s really happening is we claim to be scared to start. Scared to try. Scared to look small or silly. Scared to make mistakes. Perfectionism isn’t aspirational, it’s the opposite. All you’re doing is remaining stuck in a never ending cycle of justifying why you won’t start.
I spent my entire youth and young adulthood performing in dance and colorguard. And then I went on for decades to coach some of the best teams in the world - from very beginners to the best of the best. And it was crazy every time I was at a band camp in the beginning of the season…when all the new freshman faces were there, trying something new that looked cool to them, yet without the skills or training that come with repetition and coaching. It never failed. We would be working on learning a flag toss. And this is basic, but let me explain. A flag toss is simply when the flag leaves your hands. You toss it in the air and with the right training and technique, bring it back into your hands or body making it look effortless. But what dancers and artists and performers make look effortless always requires a lot of blood, sweat, and tears behind the scenes. You don’t see the hours of rehearsal they put in to conquer a simple task such as a flag toss. I often think of it like the old ballet slipper poster in some locker rooms across the country…you see the beautiful ballet slippers, but underneath are bruised, bloodied, worn out feet that are calloused from training.
That’s what “perfect'“ really looks like…it looks like the practice and the training and the reps no one can see.
Back to the freshman with their flag tosses. Without fail there would always be at least one new recruit that I would go over to help. She’d be standing there timid trying to hide in the back, hoping no one can see that she isn’t tossing the flag. When I would 1:1 coach this member I’d stand there with her holding her hands over the equipment and model the movements together. I’d show her the push and the pull and coach her on what to expect. But there was only so much I could do at that point. Inevitably I’d tell her…I can’t help you if you don’t let it leave your hands…I needed her to toss the flag…even if it was TERRIBLE…so I could help her get better. So I could fix and adjust in the most loving + intentional ways. How does this translate out of flags and into life?
You have to put something out there in order to improve on it. You have to be willing to get better at your craft.
So what is perfection costing you? Friends. Everything. I believe you can put things on your vision board and dream dreams and pray about the things that are on your heart. 100%.
And. If you never take ACTION you are robbing yourself from the chance to actually SEE how great you can freaking be. In order for the vision board, your dreams, or your prayers to be activated, I know without a doubt you also have to be in MOTION. When I think about God, He isn’t a genie in a bottle that I call on. He is a loving father in relationship with me. And that could be the Universe for you, IDK…but all I know is your ideas are powerless without the MARRIAGE of idea + action. The part we play isn’t to sit back and wait. To cross our fingers and hope. In this way, hope is not a strategy. It’s a death sentence to your dreams.
Every step you take in the direction of your desires is leading you closer and closer to clarity. To confidence. To mastery.
So what’s that thing you’ve been trying to get JUST RIGHT before you start? What’s the idea you’re worried you’ll suck at on your first go around? What’s the thing you’re waiting on doing until the stars align? What’s the flag toss that you’re so afraid to loosen your death grip on?
Whatever that thing is….TOSS IT FRIENDS. Messy and all. You have to toss it into the air. You have to put it out into the world. Bc you’ll never be perfect at something that doesn’t exist. One thing that I’m repeating over my journey right now that is helping me from getting caught up in the perfection trap is this:
“I CHOOSE IMPERFECT ACTION OVER NO ACTION AT ALL. EVERY TIME I SHOW UP I AM GETTING BETTER + BETTER.”
And the same is true for you, friends. I’m rooting for you. I believe in you. And that’s not enough. You’ve gotta get out there and pair all of that with some MESSY, FREAKING ACTION. Imperfect and all. 🖤🤟🏼
