② Dr Saundra walks us thru the SEVEN TYPES of REST and what they encompass.
③ And we talk about the GIFTS OF REST that come when you are courageous enough to pursue rest as a form of productivity.

LET’S DIVE IN. 🖤

Hello hello friends! Happy (almost) Thanksgiving if you’re listening to this in The United States. I hope you know how insanely grateful I am for this community and the conversations we’ve gotten to have all year long. Today is actually our FINAL real time guest conversation here on the podcast bc in December I love to do a mash up of your FAVE interviews from the past year instead of just one interview…but I promise that I have saved a really great convo for last. And one that I think you’re gonna resonate with esp this time of year when the holidays can get a little draining. You most likely pressed play bc you’re feeling some form of exhaustion and you just can’t shake it and so today we’re chatting with Dr. Saundra Dalton-Smith who is the expert on all things burnout, mental wellness, and resilience.

She’s a Board-Certified internal medicine physician, speaker, and award-winning author. She is an international well-being thought-leader. She’s been featured in numerous media outlets such as - Prevention, MSNBC, Women’s Day, FOX, Fast Company, Psychology Today, INC, CNN Health, and TED.com. She is the author of numerous books including her bestseller (and the book we are going to chat about today) Sacred Rest. Which is all about how to “Recover Your Life, Renew Your Energy, Restore Your Sanity.” In her book (and in our conversation today) she gives insight on the seven types of rest needed to optimize your productivity, increase your overall happiness, overcome burnout, and live your best life.

One of the things I love most about Dr Dalton-Smith’s work is that she created a professional development agency called Restorasis which is dedicated to restoring well-being in the workplace, something I think a lot of us are passionate about these days, right? She works specifically with companies that care about their employees and want better strategies to help them succeed BOTH at work AND at home. She helps organizations overcome employee burnout and leadership overwhelm to create a healthy culture where innovation and optimal performance thrive - I mean…how can you NOT love this?! It’s such an honor to pass her voice and message along to you today - esp if you’ve been in a season where you just. feel. TIRED. So without further ado…I wanna welcome Dr Dalton-Smith to the show. 🖤

KEY TAKEAWAYS FROM THIS EPISODE 👇🏼

① Dr Saundra kicks off the conversation by sharing how she found herself in a place of needing + writing her book, Sacred Rest. She speaks about being a toddler mom while working full time and that she realized she couldn’t even enjoy the blessing of being a mom and loving her career because she was so tired to her core. This led her to take a look at the life she built. She built a marriage, family, and job she loved and yet she had no energy to enjoy it. This is how she ventured out to build a life of success that FELT good — and her starting point was “how do I get my energy back?”

② Next she walks us thru the SEVEN TYPES OF REST - physical, mental, spiritual, emotional, social, sensory, and creative rest — with a break down for what each type of rest encompasses. We talk about how sensory RICH our world is and what that is doing to deplete our energy levels. Then we dive into social rest and the misconceptions that can come with this form of rest. Social rest is when you leave interactions better than they found you vs removing yourself from social interactions.

③ We talk about three GIFTS that comes when you’re well rested — Boundaries. Permission. And productivity. Dr Saundra gut checks us with these three areas. If you don’t have boundaries, you don’t have rest. If you’re constantly trying to be the superhero for everyone else, you won’t feel rested. Just because you don’t see examples of rest in our society, doesn’t mean you don’t have permission. You have permission. What you actually need is courage. And if you believe the lie that rest isn’t productive, you will continue to move yourself into burnout and overwhelm. You may have a fantastic work ethic, but do you have a fantastic rest ethic?
