Now, letâs get into todayâs episodeâŠ
Thereâs this trend that circulated on social a little while back where you âmet with your younger self.â Had coffee with her and got to catch her up on all thatâs ahead. But the beautiful part of this was the look back for THIS version of you whoâs here today. To look back and remember what a previous version of you worried about, how she moved thru her day to day, the goals she had, the heartbreak she carried. I knew when that trend hit I had to take stock of a previous version of me and lean in. And in actually pausing to reflect, I remember so vividly a season in my life when everything felt FULL. Not full like fulfilled, but full like overwhelmingly packed to the brim without space or capacity for one more thing. The kind of full where even just the tiniest thing added would cause the whole plate to tip and come crashing down. I basically was at capacity. My schedule was packed, my routines were non existent, I didnât care for myselfâ I had no rhythms that embodied anything that resembled self care. I truly was living each day to get thru it and then numbing and escaping when it all felt too much. And it wasnât just my schedule and lack of care. There was emotional weight, like I wasnât living up to the version of myself I knew I could be. I didnât have genuine friendships. I spent the majority of my time talking about people and problems. A lot of what I surrounded myself with was toxicâ mentally, physically, and emotionally.
Iâll never forget as that season was wrapping up and I was packing my apartment in Miami to move to California. I found myself standing in my closet, packing clothes and shoes and stuff. And I canât tell you how many outfits I pulled off the hanger that day I had either 1.) wore once and never wore again or 2.) never actually even work bc the tags were still on them. Not only was my schedule packed and my mental + emotional capacity to the brimâ my physical life was overflowing with stuff. Stuff that someone somewhere told me whether thru media or really good marketing, would fix my life and make me happy. And all it did was leave me feeling completely overwhelmed. I had clothes spilling off the shelves, shoes I never wore, and yet I still felt like I had ânothing to wear.â There was no âenoughâ in my life. Nothing was ever enough.
And sitting here 20 years laterâthis wasnât just about my closet + my yes. It was a reflection of how I felt in my life. Too much. Too cluttered. Too scattered. I feel like the last 20 years of my life has been almost a tearing down. Removing. Cleaning out. Looking at what no longer serves me and allowing it to go.
Clearing the clutterâphysically, mentally, emotionallyâwasnât just about getting organized. This wasnât just a one and done Marie Kondo thing (although those moments help!). It was about creating freedom. It was about aligning my purchases, my environment, my connections, my inner and outer world in a way that felt GOODâ not just in the moment, but for the long haul. For my progress and my growth and my best self. And thatâs what I want for you too.
WHAT CLUTTER IS DOING TO YOU:
Like I started with, clutter isnât just the piles of stuff on the counter or the overflowing inboxâitâs the weight we carry in our minds, bodies, and hearts. It creeps in slowly, disguising itself as busyness, obligation, or even nostalgia. But over time, it drains us. It clouds our decisions, steals our energy, and keeps us stuck in patterns that no longer serve us.
When we think of clutter, we often picture a messy room. But what about the mental clutter of overthinking? The emotional clutter of resentment or guilt? The physical clutter that fills our space but not our souls? When we hold onto too muchâwhether itâs things, thoughts, or emotionsâwe leave little room for what actually matters.
Letâs talk about the three biggest ways clutter affects usâand what we can do to break free.
â Mentally: Clutter creates stress, overwhelm, and decision fatigue. When thereâs too much noise, itâs hard to focus on what really matters. Studies even show that a cluttered environment can increase cortisol levels, which makes us more anxious and less able to think clearly.
⥠Physically: Clutter drains your energy. Whether itâs an overstuffed closet, a packed schedule, or a never-ending to-do list, the weight of âtoo muchâ can leave you feeling exhausted and stuck in a cycle of burnout.
âą Emotionally: Clutter keeps you stuck. Holding onto thingsâwhether itâs old belongings, past hurts, toxic relationships, or limiting beliefsâprevents you from moving forward. Clutter can also be tied to guilt or fear, making it hard to let go, even when you know itâs time.
So where is clutter showing up in your life? I want you to take a moment and think about where clutter might be showing up for you. Is it in your physical space? Your commitments? Your thoughts? Where do you feel the most overwhelm or heaviness? Awareness is the first step to change.
HOW TO START CLEARING THE CLUTTER
But. You know in this space we donât simply stop at awareness. We have to actually DO something about it if we want to see any sort of change. Recognizing clutter is one thingâactually doing something about it is another. When weâve been carrying the weight of too much for so long, the idea of clearing it out can feel overwhelming. Like where do we even start?!
Hear me loud and clearâ decluttering isnât about doing everything at once. This is ongoing. Itâs a process. Itâs about small, intentional steps that create lasting change. Itâs about making spaceâphysically, mentally, and emotionallyâfor the things that truly align with who we are and where we want to go. So often when we feel the pull to make a change we do it with big swings. Itâs the all in mentality at play and it really isnât serving you to swing so far, so fast. Think about it. If a pendulum swings one way, what is it inevitably going to do in due time? Swing the other, right? And this is why we get stuck in the start-stop cycles over and over again. We swing into action too far, too fast and when it pulls us backâŠit really pulls us back into habits and behaviors that donât actually serve us any longer. So letâs think about SMALL STEPS instead of SUDDEN SWINGS.
Small steps are going to add up over time and will be far less overwhelming. No perfection. But also, no procrastination. You just have to begin. At The Sisterhood Retreat last year, we went around and shared our BIG goals we were walking out of the retreat with. And as the good coach I am, I listened and nodded along as each woman read her goals out loud. And being an even better coach, I went one woman at a time and we dissected her goals into SMALL STEPS. Doable actions. And we SLOWED THE F DOWN, yaâll. One of my favorite goals had to do with exactly what weâre talking about todayâdecluttering. She had this ambitious goal to get home from the retreat and do a full on clean out. A SUDDEN SWING if you will in her physical environment. But the whole weekend leading up to that goal, she shared her full travel schedule she had coming up, she shared about a roommate situation that was sticky and messy and that she was working on getting her space back to her own. She shared about how she was on the hunt for a new job. And all I could think when she shared this sudden swing goal was âthat sounds so niceâŠand youâre never gonna do that.â Because the reality was, it was a sudden swing and it would only last so long amongst her LIFE that she had to go home to. And the same is true for you. So I want to slow you down right now and show you a better way to clear the clutter.
Hereâs how to startâ
â Identify whatâs taking up too much space â Look at your physical environment, your thoughts, and your commitments. What feels heavy? Whatâs draining you? At the retreat we literally speak TWO DAYS doing this work. Shedding tears. Talking things out. Meditating and doing breath work and slowing down so we could see and feel what wasnât in alignment.
⥠Decide what no longer serves you â If itâs not adding value, peace, or joy to your life, itâs time to let it go. Again, this is a process. And itâs not one and done. You will CONSTANTLY have to decide and re-decide what no longer serves you. Let it be ongoing.
âą Take small, intentional steps â You donât have to declutter everything overnight. Nor do I think you should. If we go back to the example from the retreatâ the ultimate goal was two fold: she wanted her dining room table back bc it had been covered in clutter for some time now AND she wanted to create a relaxing bedroom vibe bc her current bedroom was chaotic, cluttered, and outdated. What did I have her do? I had her find the domino that would help the rest. It wasnât her bedroom. It wasnât even the dining table. We realized after digging deeper that the problem was she had no where to STORE the things that were causing the clutter. Nothing had a home. And the main reason there was not where to store anything was bc her closet was a mess. So her FALL GOAL (yes I had her work on this in September and October bc remember her schedule and other LIFE responsibilities?!) her goal for those two months was to get her closet cleaned out and organized so she could then begin the work on the dining table and her bedroom. Start with one drawer, one thought pattern, or one obligation at a time. Small, consistent changes lead to big transformations.
⣠Create space for what matters â When you let go and begin to do the work of clearing out, you make room for things that align with who youâre becoming. Often we get uncomfortable and want to fill that space right away. It could be more stuff. Or maybe itâs more on the calendar. Or it could even be more noiseâmore distractions, commitments, or even emotional baggage that keeps us from sitting with the stillness. Iâm gonna nudge you NOT to fill those spaces too fast. Let it be open. Let it fill organically. And if you do find something that will fill that space, I want you to ask what youâre willing to sacrifice for that thing. Maybe itâs time. Maybe itâs sanity. Maybe itâs just more stuff to wash and dust and clean and have to keep up with. More often than not, when I find space in my life, I realize I donât actually want to fill it right away. I want to enjoy the margin.
†Establish new habits to keep clutter from creeping back in â This isnât a one-time thing. Whether itâs a weekly reset, a âone in, one outâ rule for physical things, or setting boundaries with your time, the key is to create a lifestyle that supports the space you desire. Simply put, youâve got to check yourself often and have a game plan for when you feel that pull to allow clutter back in.
At the end of the day, decluttering isnât just about getting rid of thingsâitâs about making intentional choices that support the life you truly want. When you start with small, meaningful steps instead of sudden swings, you create real, lasting change. So, take a breath, trust the process, and remind yourself that clearing clutter is less about perfection and more about making space for what truly matters.
Alright friendsâŠ.I hope todayâs conversation gave you a fresh perspective on clutterânot just the physical kind, but the mental and emotional weight we carry every single day. We talked about how clutter sneaks into our lives, how it affects our peace and progress, and most importantly, how small, intentional steps can help us clear space for what truly matters.
This isnât about perfection or tackling everything at once âremember how I coached my girls at the retreatâ itâs about starting where you are, making one small change at a time, and allowing yourself the space to grow, heal, and move forward. Because when we clear the clutter, we donât just create spaceâwe create possibility for living in alignment with our best selves. And thatâs the best feeling ever.
