LET’S DIVE IN. 🖤

Okay. I am so freaking pumped ya’ll…we have our VERY. FIRST. GUEST SPEAKER - Burnout Recovery Coach + fellow Podcaster, Emily Johnson – on The SELF CARE Sisterhood today!!! I’m really excited to add some other voices into the conversation as we navigate all things growth, dreams, and caring for ourselves along the way this year and I’m just so pumped that Emily is the first voice (obviously other than my husband, Charles) that we get to hear pour into us in this space.

Emily discovered her passion for helping others heal from burnout after falling into multiple cycles of burnout, herself. She boldly left behind a well paying, yet toxic work environment in the Bay Area, moving to Canada and pursue her passion of Holistic Nutrition. This first leap was meant to steer her away from the burnout cycle, but it actually ended up placing her on her own healing journey that included therapy, mindfulness, and a learning about how to heal from burnout. Now she owns a wellness coaching business centered around all things burnout.

She believes that we can ALL heal from burnout + grow in self awareness and her story is living proof.

In our conversation, Emily shares so many nuggets of gold if you find yourself in a season of stress, overwhelm, or burnout. We chat thru why New Years Resolutions tend to burn us out and how to head into this New Year in a more mindful way. She offers her fave journal strategies + prompts. And we talk about seasons of transition, how to down regulate your nervous system, and

I can’t wait for you to hear Emily’s advice for how to break the burnout cycle, so let’s dive in with some of the key takeaways of this episode.

KEY TAKEAWAYS FROM THIS EPISODE 👇🏼

① TOXIC WORK, OVERFULL SCHEDULES, TRANSITIONS, DEMANDS + PRESSURES - ALL CAN LEAD TO BURNOUT.

Often we see all the fun opportunities in front of us when diving into new jobs, new cities, new yeses and we forget that there will be uncertainty + challenges. Emily shares this in depth as she walks us thru her journey with breaking burnout. But, she reminds us that transition seasons offer the most opportunity for growth. Being uncomfortable always equals growth.

② STRATEGIES TO BREAK BURNOUT CYCLES IN A NEW YEAR.

Often we do things that don’t actually align with our vision for our life. Emily gives us a 3 part framework for how to steer clear of the New Years Resolution/Burnout Trap.

First she emphasizes getting clear on your goals and making sure your actions + goals are also aligned with your VALUES. Then she coaches us to define our version of success and make sure that the goals we’re setting are moving us towards this. It might look different than how society defines success and that’s OKAY. And last, to avoid the New Years Resolution burnout, Emily encourages scheduling in restorative time - living with intention for what we need each day vs on auto pilot for what everyone else demands.

③ HOW TO KNOW YOU’RE HEADING INTO A BURNOUT CYCLE + LEANING INTO SELF CARE + SELF AWARENESS TO HEAL.

Our bodies keep score. So Emily encourages us to pay attention to the cues our body is giving us. This is a signal to know if you’re moving INTO a burnout cycle. Body awareness is everything - headaches, anxiety, restlessness, chronic business…all of these point to being on the brink of burnout.

We also talk about how to down regulate your nervous system and I love the way Emily explains this. Learning how to be in the rest + digest (parasympathetic nervous system) more often than not is essential for breaking burnout. Using a heart rate monitor like a Whoop or an Oura ring to track your heart rate will easily let you know if you’re living in chronic heightened stress. But other than that, you can really lean into when your body + energy feels heightened. Breath work. Unplugging. Getting into nature. Meditation. Stretching. Baths. These will all help you down regulate the nervous system.

Also knowing WHAT TYPE of self care YOU need to hone in on is crucial. She reminds us that can take all the bubble baths in the world, but if you don’t need physical self care, that isn’t going to help you. Gaining awareness for how the self care is translating in your life is so important.
